• She’s been alive for a week and a half, and already someone is trying to make money off Blue Ivy Carter. A former Phat Farm intern, Joseph Mbeh, is requesting a trademark on the name Blue Ivy Carter, which he appropriated for his children’s clothing line.Mbeh claims he has been using the name since two days after the child’s birth (oh really, that long?), and submitted a mock up of designs for the line. I wonder which is more unappealing, that stripey floral baby dress, or trying to capitalize off somebody’s newborn child? (Global Grind)• Swiss watch company Swatch is catching Olympic fever! The watches have the element of the British Mod aesthetic in its design, as well as the logo for the 2012 Olympic Games.• While Jay-Z was rejoicing in the birth of his new daughter, half of his staff (28 of 56) over at Rocawear were lamenting the loss of their jobs. The company cited “economic reasons” for the mass layoffs, in spite of the Carter-Knowles economy itself being quite strong. (Animal NY)• Rapper mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is being sued by Empress Haircare Products over the use of the “Empress” name for his fragrance which launched last summer. (Fashion Etc.)• Remember the Kim Kardashian look alike used in one of Old Navy‘s commercials? After the reality star accused the retailer of damaging her brand and infringing on her intellectual property, parent company Gap is investigating how much this commercial actually tarnished Ms. Kardashian’s shining reputation. (Hollywood Reporter)• I actually gasped in horror after seeing Joan Smalls and Saskia de Brauw jump into a pool wearing all Chanel Spring 2012 in this behind-the-scenes look at the campaign. It is almost more remarkable than seeing Karl Lagerfeld photograph a real life black person. (Chanel Youtube)• Ebony magazine has redesigned its site in efforts to “[represent] a true extension of our brand,” says Editor-in-Chief Amy DuBois Barnett. “It provides a platform to showcase our cutting-edge content while complementing the classic appeal of the magazine.” Check it out at Jihan

Khloe Kardashian stepped out in New York City in an all-black look, uplifted with gold statement earrings, her favorite $1,945 Givenchy Pepe Shoulder Bag, and the same $1,150 Giuseppe Zanotti Suede Colorblock Platform Sandals that Nicki Minaj wore at a MAC Viva Glam event in February. While Nicki went totally bold in a $428 Nanette Lepore Straight A Jacket and striped dress from the Spring 2012 collection, Khloe kept it neutral and let her shoes play centerstage. The eye-catching suede sandals boast blue and teal colorblock straps and 5 1/2″ heels.Neither of these outfits suit my style, though I do enjoy elements of both. I like the way Nicki went for full-on color, but I also like Khloe’s ensemble which let the shoes make the statement. In our previous Hot! or Hmm… poll regarding Nicki’s outfit, you guys voted her ensemble ‘hot,’ and she’s the winner here for me, too. What do you think?

Freida Pinto left the thigh-high slits behind at the L’Oréal And Cannes Film Festival 15 Ans Dîner. For the night, she chose a white and gold silk and chainmail dress from Paco Rabanne’s Fall 2012 collection and $695 Jimmy Choo Linda Sandals:Check out her dress on the runway, modeled by Fashion Bomb favorite Jasmine Tookes. Her patent leather sandals are classic, featuring buckled ankle straps and 4 3/4″ heels. The shoes are the only downfall here! Freida definitely should have paired this gorgeous dress with gold sandals. Sigh. At any rate, she still looks beautiful. What do you think? Hot! or Hmm…?

The Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games is less than five months away and this date holds particular importance for Stella McCartney. This go round, she is designing the uniforms for the British Olympic team: no small feat for a designer who already shows four collections a year. With such a big project on the horizon, it was no surprise that a sporty vibe crept into her Fall 2012 designs. That influence did not of course stop her from what she does best: functional, menswear-inspired tailoring for the modern-day woman on the go who keeps a polished appearance and comfort at the forefront of her mind.Outerwear is a focus of any Fall 2012 collection and McCartney came straight out the gate with a long cobalt and grey boxy coat with a black ruffle collar: a trend that would continue on a coat of the same nature in a darker colorblock palette on Joan Smalls. There was also a cropped wool bomber jacket accented with varsity stripes, harking back to the sporty influence that pervaded through the collection.Padded hips anyone? These definitely were not the most wearable looks out of the group, but were certainly the most fashion-forward. A long beige seamed coat on Cora Emmanuel, a midi-length knit sweaterdress layered over a collared shirt, an expertly-tailored suit that channeled Christian Dior’s New Look: designs for the fashion daredevil who loves making a statement.Knits are staples in McCartney’s collections and here she showed everything from chunky knit sweaters to a cardigan/pencil skirt combination that will definitely appeal to the modern-day working woman.Last but not least were the collection’s dresses which really drove home the athletic-inspired vibe including track jacket-inspired styling, flirty tennis skirt bottoms and colorblock stretch panels which had the feeling of wetsuits: a total departure from the brand’s uber-popular Fall 2011 sheer polka dot dresses, but still sensual nevertheless.I really loved this collection from Stella McCartney. There was a great balance between functionality and fashion-forward design, while still mixing in her signatures. The shoes in the collection are surely going to be a big hit (as Alicia Keys has already demonstrated) and it will be interesting to see how her legion of celebrity fans wear the pieces in the coming months: the athletic-inspired dresses are a must for Serena Williams and Melanie B, the chunky knits for Rihanna and the tailored blazers and jackets for Kim Kardashian. What do you think?#gallery-1 {margin: auto;}#gallery-1 .gallery-item {float: left;margin-top: 10px;text-align: center;width: 33%;}#gallery-1 img {border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;}#gallery-1 .gallery-caption {margin-left: 0;}/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */Photos:

Though the shooting of Trayvon Martin has been huge on the national and international news scene, the fashion world has remained quite mum. Designer Tracy Reese broke the silence at the launch of her Clos du Bois Chic Picnique Tuesday night in New York City, telling Huffington Post Black Voices, “Young men of color can’t be targets.”In case you’re not up to speed, Florida high school student Trayvon Martin was shot by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer who said Martin looked suspicious because he was wearing a hoodie. Martin’s family believes the teen was a victim of racial discrimination, something Reese said she experienced herself as a student at Parsons School of Fashion. When she went into stores to conduct class reports, she said, “I would notice when I went out, that I was being shadowed sometimes, and it used to irritate me. But at the end of the day I was in a public place, and it was my right to be there. We should feel free to be wherever we want to be.”  She added that with Trayvon’s case, “The whole thing is just so sad, and the excuses are so lame.” Agreed. At any rate, the article is pretty interesting.
