• The city of Houston, Texas is raising money to fund a shrine monument to pop superstar Beyoncé Knowles.CEO of Armdeonce Ventures, (one of the three companies masterminding the project) Marcus Mitchell said,“We wanted to construct, like, a massive hall so as the doors open, if you donated to the monument, you’ll have a separate nameplate. There will be clips of Beyonce with Destiny’s Child and wardrobe like a mini museum.” Finally, Beyoncé stans will have a gilded hall unto which they can bring burnt offerings and sacrifices to pay tribute to the most high priestess, our Lady Beysus. Amen. (PopCrush)• In addition to their new pricing system, J.C. Penney is overhauling the whole shopping experience. The retailer plans to separate their store into little “shops” for each brand they carry. So, if you’re looking for a frock from L’Amour, their newest collaboration with designer Nanette Lepore , you would mosey on over to the L’Amour shop, instead of scouring the entire juniors section for the dress. J.C. Penney’s revamp is a lot more layered than we previously thought. Hopefully, all these changes will yield the results they desire. It would be a shame to go through all this trouble and experience little change in sales or worse– plummeting profits. (Fashionista)• Halle Berry joins the ranks of celebrities stamping their names on collections they had little to no hand in designing. The actress has teamed up with German retailer Deichmann Shoes to create the ’5th Avenue by Halle Berry‘ collection. The 40-piece capsule features several low-heeled, comfortable looking sandals and wedges, perfect for those mothers on the go. The shoes are certainly ones you could wear down 5th avenue. Whether you would is a different question. (Hello Beautiful)• Adriana Lima stars in Donna Karan‘s Spring 2012 campaign video, walking through the backstreets and forests of Haiti, the country where Hatians only exist when they’re in drum circles. (Beauty is Diverse)• Halle Berry isn’t the only celebrity coming out with a shoe line. Wendy Williams will debut the fall 2012 collection for her new venture, Adorn, this week. For months, the talk show host and celebrity gossip goddess has kept this project under wraps, and she is finally opening up about her latest endeavor: “It’s one of the hardest things that I have had to keep from [my audience]. I haven’t had a secret as hard to keep since I was sworn to secrecy about being on ‘Dancing With the Stars.’” Keeping her larger-footed sisters in mind, the line’s size range will go all the way up to 12.  Big feet gal, big up yaself! (WWD)• Amber Rose was spotted out and about with her rapper boyfriend, Wiz Khalifa, sporting a very clean shaven head and a tribal face tattoo that may or may not be real. What do you think? Well, Givenchy of course!Kanye West perched front row at the brand’s Fall 2012 womenswear show in Paris in a white star studded sweater from Givenchy’s Fall 2012 mens collection:While the sweater was originally modeled with a starred and studded collared shirt underneath, the artist formerly known as the Louis Vuitton don skewed cool, rocking the sweater on its own with black pants.A star shirt is the perfect piece for a star producer/rapper/designer. Can’t get enough fashion?Check out a few of my reviews over at From Barbara Bui to John Galliano, and more, you’re sure to get even more of a runway fashion fix.Issey Miyake:An excerpt: “Always at the forefront of sartorial innovation, Yoshiyuki Miyamae of Issey Miyake launched a new textile titled “Steam Stretch,” for Fall 2012. To introduce the fabrication, the designer had seamstresses bring what appeared to be formless sheaths of fabric to hang on the runway. Then, with the help of steaming hot irons, the formless pieces were transformed into flared dresses in girly salmon, column gowns in burgundy and beige, ice blue knee length frocks, and shifts mixing navy and buff.”Read the rest here.Barbara Bui:An excerpt: “Military inspiration was given a bit of whit and sparkle with Barbara Bui’s Fall 2012 collection, which featured buttoned up, double breasted suits cast in wool and shimmering metallic fabric. Resting heavily on menswear inspired silhouettes, the collection included trousers uplifted by matching jackets in moss green wool, along with quilted satin pants suits, and silk chiffon shirts equipped with ribbon bow ties.” Read the rest here.Tsumori Chisato:An excerpt: “Who said Fall had to be all about dark and somber colors, embedded in black? Tsumori Chisato went for bright pastels, neons, and bold hues, eschewing the season’s somber predilections, yet still harkening to winter with ski slope prints on knee length shifts, and knits upon glorious knits. Paint splashed pants mixing pale pink, cream, and azure worked with bejeweled knit sweaters, finished with cut out wedges or patterned stockings.”Read the rest here.Vivienne Westwood Gold Label:An excerpt: “Vivienne Westwood riffed on 17th century British monarchical dress for her Fall 2012 Gold Label collection, imagining regal corseted gowns infused with out of this world elements. Green laser lights and a UFO projection set the stage for the show, which featured everything from dresses with large upturned collars, bejeweled jackets with frothy crinoline skirts, to frocks dipped in sequins. “ Read the rest here.John Galliano:An excerpt: “John Galliano’s latest collection took inspiration from the equestrian culture of aristocratic heiresses, boasting asymmetrical capes and tailored riding coats fit for a fashionable horse ride. Dramatic collared fur trimmed anoraks in autumnal colors were paired with abbreviated bloomers–in place of riding pants, Galliano substituted micro shorts and thigh high knit socks, adding a bit of eroticism to the undertaking.” Read the rest here. And many, many more. You guys loved our Breaking into Fashion Interview with Teen Vogue Accessories Director Shiona Turini so much, I decided to keep the party going with a profile on celebrity makeup artist extraordinaire, Merrell Hollis. In addition to painting Wendy Williams to perfection every day for her talk show (how you doin?!?), Hollis has also worked with Naomi Campbell, Mary J Blige, Vivica J Fox, Selita Ebanks, Usher, Alek Wek, Monica, Faith, and Diddy. He put his brushes down for a spell to tell you hopefuls how you can one day take the plunge into the beauty business, and beat faces with the best of them.A native of Columbus, Georgia, Merrell gained inspiration as a young kid by watching his mother and aunts getting ready for work. He says, “I used to watch my aunt. Every morning, she would change her fingernail polish to match her outfit. She would paint polka dots, she could paint California Raisins on her nails, she was really talented! At the time I thought I was either going to be a queen or work with women (laughs). I’ve always put women on such a pedestal, that’s why I’ve always just been in awe. I figured the best thing to do would be to work with them.”After attending American Intercontinental University in Atlanta, Hollis went on to the International School of Skin, Nail Car, and Massage Therapy. He ultimately caught his big break in a bit of an unconventional way. He explains, “One of my friends was a video girl, and told me she went to audition for a video for the R&B group 112. I was a big 112 fan, so I decided to just show up.” After borrowing his mom’s car, he went to CVS, bought a brush kit, and found his way onto the set. He says, “I pretended I was the makeup artist. A production assistant eventually ratted me out, but the main artist on set, Maurice Beaman, needed an assistant.” The stars aligned at the right time, and Beaman, who now works for Tyler Perry, took Hollis under his wing.Atlanta’s music scene was hot at the time, and Hollis fittingly accompanied Beaman to numerous commercials and video sets. He said, “I used to commute back and forth on the weekends because I was still in high school. I had to graduate in summer school.” When he wasn’t working with Atlanta celebs like 112, Monica, Jagged Edge, Blacque, and Usher, he apprenticed under Beaman at his salon, shampooing, braiding, roller setting, doing brows, and applying makeup.Merrell’s reputation for hard and fantastic work preceded him. When a friend of a friend found out Wendy Williams was looking for makeup artists for her then new talk show, she threw Merrell’s hat in the ring. He said, “[Wendy] was going to try out different people. We ended up ki-ki-ing on the first day, and I ultimately got the job.” Wendy tapes live, so Merrell’s on call from 7-11am, then leaves in the afternoon for editorial shoots.I had to ask him about which beauty products he’d recommend! He said, “I love the beauty blender aka the little pink egg. You can get it at Sephora. It’s an anti bacterial sponge that you can rinse out everyday. It lasts forever and is great for the environment. I also love Makeup Forever’s Color Flash Kit. It has 12 colors from pink to gold and you can use it for lips, cheeks, eyes–you can even mix it in with your foundation! I also swear by Laura Mercier transluscent powder, L’Oréal Carven Voluminous mascara, and Du Wop lip stain (it plumps your lips–it’s the bomb!).”More Laura Mercier…And what about tips for those looking to follow a similar path? He says, “Do it for the love of the job, not for celebrities or red carpets. Assist under someone whose work ethic and work you respect. There are people I truly look up to like Pat McGrath and Sam Fine. Those are the people I’m trying to pattern myself after. Also, stay humble. No matter if you are working with the top person, anything can be taken away from you.”He added a few pointed tips for those seeking to work with stars: “A celeb is a client, they are not your friend. Don’t drink, smoke, or get loose with your client. They lose respect for you. Lastly, speak when spoken to. Don’t add all your input. Stay out of their personal business. Just do lashes and lipstick, don’t get involved. Be extremely discreet. They hired you to be the makeup artist, not their sister, confidant, or friend.”Alright!Keep an eye peeled for Merrell’s forthcoming product line and book! Also, check him out at and follow him on Twitter @makeupbymerrell.What do you think of today’s Breaking into Fashion interview?
