• As a response to Vogue Italia’s controversial “Haute Mess” spread, Ladygunn magazine published “Chola!” which they describe as a more “tasteful” and “beautiful” version of what “Haute Mess” may have been trying to achieve. Editor-in-chief Koko Ntuen explained the reasoning behind the spread, saying; “what I saw in ‘Haute Mess’ was [that] it looked like the models were kind of making fun of those type of people, you know, the way they presented it, [we wanted to] make the model look glamorous, and we’re not having her, like, eating tacos with all gold teeth and smiling mockingly at the camera. We’re just trying to show a beautiful side of every culture.” Sounds good enough, right? Expert contortionist Ntuen promptly thereafter put her foot in her mouth, telling The Cut why she chose the title “Chola!”: “I think it’s something like that can be embraced by everyone, just like how the term “nigga,” [has] been embraced, especially by younger generations. That’s just, like, a word. I feel like everyone is just trying to make these words desensitized, so it just expresses their culture…I don’t know if I would be comfortable running a fashion story called, “Nigga!” because people would be like, “What?” [Laughs.] But I think if we did, and we did it tastefully, who knows, maybe it could sit well.” Hey, Koko, why don’t you do a fashion story called “Nigga!”? Publish it, and distribute it around a black neighborhood to see how it will “sit” with the “niggas.”  I guarantee your career will go the direction of Jackie magazine’s former Editor-in-Chief, Eva Hoeke. (Us)Rihanna in Marchesa• WWD is reporting that Marchesa is looking to add a contemporary line to the already-popular brand. Marchesa is a red carpet favorite, with stars like Viola Davis and Ciara having worn their pieces. The brand is in talks with LF USA, and as of now, that is all the information available. (WWD) • Because good money shouldn’t go to waste, the folks over at Louis Vuitton plan to use the showstopping locomotive they debuted in Paris for a reprise of the fall/winter 2012 show in Shanghai in late July. In a a recent article, Elle France writer Nathalie Dolivo attempts to delve into the world of black fashion, writing that black women use fashion as a ‘political weapon,‘ and have ‘returned to style as a source of dignity.’Citing the Obamas as the inspiration for this “ black fashion renaissance,” Dolivo says, “Michelle Obama sets the tone, focusing on cutting-edge brands….revisiting the wardrobe of Jackie O in a jazzy way.” She continues to write that while black women in the 30′s wore flapper dresses, and women in the 60′s were inspired by Angela Davis, black women of 2012 constitute a ‘black-geosie‘, integrating all the ‘white codes‘ of dress while adding twists like african print turbans and shell neckaces (!!!).Her ethnographic research admittedly caused an uproar amongst Elle France readers, who wrote, “[This is] GROTESQUE, SHAMEFUL, and USELESS. White dress codes? Did I really read white dress codes..?” Another fervent reader said, “You really think we waited until the Obama’s to know style and let go of our ‘streetwear’ proclivities?” while another wrote, “How, in 2012, in a France where there are at least three million blacks and mixed people, can you write such nonsense? You are too kind when you write that in 2012 we have incorporated the white codes…what do you think, in 2011, we dressed in hay and burlap bags?” And the comments went on and on and on.Dear Magazines: This is what happens when there are no black people on staff. It’s really crazy to think this woman believed black people, particularly African Americans, didn’t start ‘dressing up’ until Michelle Obama. This poor journalist clearly didn’t do any research at all; didn’t see the impact of the Supremes and Diana Ross in the 50′s, 60′s, and 70′s, the wardrobes of TV starlets like Clair Huxtable in the 80′s, the sartorial impact of everyone from Salt N Pepa to TLC to Aaliyah in the 90′s and naughts. The truly flustering passage was when she attributed black modern dress to white dress codes, then ventured to say we ‘afro-centrize’ our looks with shells and ‘boubous’. Some of us do, some of us don’t. We are not one monolithic group to be written about like zoo animals.I just. Can’t.What do you think?The full article is here (it’s in French).

Happy Friday Bombshells!A lot of you have written in asking about my workout routine, so at the top of the year, I’ve finally decided to divulge:The quick and painless story is that I love going to the gym. For health and vanity reasons I think it’s important to stay in shape, even if only to minimize all the bumps and rolls one may spy under a bit of spandex:) Aside from shopping and writing, I’d put working out on my top five list of things to do in my free time. I hit the gym 3-5 times a week, and at least 2 out of those 5 days I work with a trainer:Why I love trainers: they know what they’re doing. You’re in and out in an hour. You ensure you’re not wasting your time. And though it’s painful (and can be expensive), it’s the most sure way to achieve your goals. At any rate, here’s a quick breakdown of what I do every week:Mondays are all about cardio. I’ll hit the stairmaster on a hill interval at level 10 for 45 minutes, or hop on the arc trainer at level 5 for the same amount of time. This ensures lots of sweat with minimal impact on the knees. Tuesday, I LOVE my spin class…! My instructor always plays the best music (from Beyonce to Rihanna to Jay-Z)  and gets you pumped. Wednesday, Thursday, and sometimes Friday, I link up with Emiliano:For 60 minutes, we do a series of drills together, including lunges, weights, push ups, and other horrible, torturous things.On the weekend (weather permitting), I run at least 4 miles in the park, outside, bumping to Soulja Boy, Gucci Mane, and an auditory potpourri of Southern Music.Though I love to work out, I also love to EAT, so have resolved in 2012 that in addition to working out, I’d work on my diet to bring my body to where I’d like it to be. I’ve totally sworn off red meat, eat cheese rarely, stick to poultry and fish, drink mostly water (or coconut water if I want something sweet), and snack on nuts and almonds. Apparently for my body type, it’s best if I’m mostly vegetarian, so I try to eat at least a few all veggie meals, and of course stay up on fruits like apples, oranges, and bananas.I am FAR from my fitness goals, but hopefully this year I can push it to the limit.
